Tom Smetsers (Tegelen 1982 – )
After acquiring the necessary technical and artisanal knowledge, he began his artistic career in 2005. The relocation of his studio to the countryside and the impulse to create more with less are the basis of his latest artworks, in which peace and simplicity prevail. After an experimental period, the latest work has achieved dimensional stability and possesses the balance, refinement and harmony desired. Tom Smetsers is a metal and glass artist. He creates high-level glass and bronze sculptures. His harmonious forms, in which the lines of twists increase in an exciting way, he describes as "primordial forms of the new era". The foundation of these ingenious creations is located in Sribuat, an archipelago in the middle of the South China Sea. Here he undertook a journey in 2006, freely photographing enormous shell-like shapes. Upon his return home, that proved to be the first step toward what today has unmistakably become his distinctive trait. Anyone who talks with Tom Smetsers is easily captivated by his enthusiasm, overwhelmed by his determination, moved by his energy. He is the first to admit it: "I am super-busy and chaotic, a thinking dreamer until I fall asleep".
