- Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish
painter, sculptor and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Málaga, he spent most of his adult life in France. Picasso is best known as co‑founder of the Cubist movement and his contributions to Symbolism and Surrealism. His productive career is marked by several periods, each showing his ability to innovate and reinvent his style.
Picasso's work is characterized by
several periods, such as the Blue Period, the Rose Period, the African-influenced Period and the Cubist Period.
His groundbreaking Cubist works, made together with Georges Braque, deconstructed objects into geometric shapes and transformed the visual arts. Picasso explored themes such as love, war and the human experience, producing masterpieces such as 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Guernica'.
Similar artists in terms of
innovation and market value include contemporaries such as Henri Matisse and later successors such as Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. All of these artists shaped the art market through their own styles and conceptual depth, and have achieved some of the highest auction prices in the world.
Picasso's artworks are among the most valuable and sought-after in the art market. His works frequently break auction records, underscoring his lasting legacy and influence. For example, 'Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O)' sold in 2015 for $179.4 million. Collectors and institutions worldwide highly cherish his works.
"Don Quijote" is a striking drawing by Picasso, made in 1955. This piece depicts the legendary Spanish literary characters Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. Picasso's minimalist and expressive lines capture the essence of these iconic figures with remarkable simplicity and elegance. The drawing was created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first part of Miguel de Cervantes' novel "Don Quijote". It is a testament to Picasso's ability to convey depth and personality with just a few swift strokes.
The ongoing innovation and influence of Pablo Picasso on the art world ensure his lasting impact. His works remain highly valuable, with substantial attention and prices in the global art market. 'Don Quijote' illustrates Picasso's ability to combine simplicity with expressive power, and demonstrates his mastery of line and form.
