“Deep in the jungle of our fiction” was part of nine works presented by Rinus van de Velde at S.M.A.K. Jules Romains’ screenplay ‘Donogoo Tonka’ (1920) formed the basis for the eponymous solo exhibition. Van de Velde cast himself in a role within Romains’ surreal and satirical story, which – like the artist’s oeuvre – constantly hovers on the border of the fictitious. The drawing is a typical example of Van de Velde’s practice: virtuosic and light, yet carefully built up from intelligent, at times confusing layers. ‘Donogoo Tonka’, the story: The career of a geographer is at stake after it is discovered that he invented a city in South America. A young man with suicidal thoughts finds a new life purpose: he wants to restore the geographer’s reputation and begins a zealous promotion of the fictitious city. Humorous developments lead to the actual founding of the city, a fact that raises questions about the truth of scientific knowledge and the historical chain of cause and effect.
