Description from the seller
King Charles III – Set of 6 original photographic proofs as a young Prince – “Private for The Queen” – Royal Family
Description
Rare and remarkable set of six original photographic proofs depicting a young Prince Charles, now King Charles III.
The six photographs originate from the same royal portrait sitting and present the young Prince in a series of slightly different poses.
What makes this group particularly unusual are the handwritten editorial and selection annotations preserved on the photographs and their margins, including:
“Private for The Queen”
“Private”
“No”
Several photographs are specifically marked “Private for The Queen”, apparently indicating that these particular proofs were reserved for the Queen’s consideration or private use.
Other photographs bear selection numbers, crosses and rejection markings, providing a fascinating insight into the photographic selection process surrounding an official portrait sitting of the future King.
Rather than six ordinary royal portraits, this is a coherent working group of photographic proofs, retaining evidence of the process through which the Prince’s official image was selected and controlled.
The photographs have been preserved together as a set.
Subject: Prince Charles, now King Charles III
Number of photographs: 6
Technique: Original black-and-white photographic prints / proofs
Dimensions: approximately 24 × 20 cm each
Annotations: handwritten editorial and selection annotations, including “Private for The Queen”, “Private” and “No”
Condition: Good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and handling consistent with their original use as photographic proofs. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
An evocative and highly unusual piece of British royal photographic history, documenting the future King Charles III long before his accession to the throne.
Provenance: acquired at auction in Paris, France.
