Luis Filcer (Zhitomir, 1927 - 2018)

Luis Filcer was born in 1927 in Ukraine. His Jewish family left in the 1930s, fearing pogroms, for Mexico where Filcer subsequently grew up. At the age of 17 he began his painting studies at the San Carlos Academy of Art. He won several art competitions and represented Mexico at various Biennales in Chile, Japan and England. After receiving a study grant, Filcer studied and worked at several art academies in Europe. Filcer also settled for a time in the Netherlands, where he lived and worked for twenty years. Filcer paints the contrasts in people across social, economic and religious dimensions. His works reveal different (unpleasant) human relationships. Thus he depicts abuse of power and unbalanced authoritarian relations. The decadent judiciary he paints with enormous bodies and an ironic smile. Also the hypocritical bourgeoisie and the corrupt clerical power come into play in Filcer's work. He consistently aligns himself with the weak. Thus he also paints fishermen, beggars, farmers and prostitutes because he feels connected with them. His paintings are an indictment, a protest against the heartlessness of those who pull the strings. Filcer also paints human pleasure and sultry nights. Thus the Amsterdam red-light district in the 1960s made a strong impression on Filcer. Filcer also portrays simple earthly people full of primal feelings of love, loyalty and belonging.
