DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
We present at auction a precious and rare 1963 paper by Nicola Carrino, the undisputed master of contemporary sculpture and founder, in that same decade, of the historic Group 1.
The work, a refined "Untitled" executed in mixed media, dates from a crucial moment of transition and lively exploration for the artist. In the early 1960s, before definitively moving to his famous three-dimensional modules in iron and steel, Carrino explored space through the surface of the sheet. In this composition he seeks geometric equilibria, structural rhythms, and constructive tensions that will become the core of his entire later poetic. The paper already reveals that extraordinary analytical and rational sensibility that would make him one of the central figures of Italian Constructivism.
This is a historic and intellectually rigorous work, presented within an elegant baton frame. The work is also enhanced and guaranteed by the prestigious exhibition and bibliographic background, as well as by the authenticity statement issued by the historic Rotta Gallery of Genoa (signed by Rinaldo Rotta), in which the provenance is listed as "author." Master Carrino was represented at that time precisely by Rotta Gallery, of which he was one of the leading artists, alongside Lucio Fontana, Mario Schifano and others.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES AND CRITICAL REMARKS ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nicola Carrino (Taranto, 1932 – Rome, 2018) was one of the most important and rigorous Italian sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. Moving to Rome in the 1950s, he began his research starting from realism and informal art, then in the 1960s arriving at a radical geometric purism. In 1962 he founded Group 1 (with Nato Frascà, Gastone Biggi, Achille Pace, Pasquale Santoro and Giuseppe Uncini), a movement essential for the development of Constructivism in Italy, advocating art understood as logical, serial, and rational inquiry, in sharp contrast to the emotion of informal art.
From the late 1960s onward, his research focused on the famous "Transformable Constructors": geometric modules (often monumental) in iron, steel, or bronze, designed to actively interact with the urban and architectural environment. Carrino thus transforms the very idea of sculpture, which ceases to be a closed object and becomes an "open form" that can be assembled and modified over time by the viewer or according to the surrounding space.
In addition to his intense exhibition activity, he was a respected professor of Sculpture at the Arts Academies and a prominent member of the National Academy of San Luca, of which he was also President in 2009-2010. He exhibited in the world’s most important museums, participating in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale, the Rome Quadriennale, and the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. His imposing public sculptures and urban restructuring interventions are now in many Italian and international squares, cementing him as a major figure of contemporary plastic arts.
