Authentic Taishō period choba dansu from Japan, mainly in sugi with hinoki, measuring about 94 cm wide by 96 cm tall and 45 cm deep, in good restored condition with dark iron fittings and a hidden compartment.
Description from the seller
Authentic Japanese choba-dansu (商場箪笥), a traditional merchant's or trader's cabinet, dating from the Taishō period (1912–1926).
The cabinet has the characteristic layout of a choba-dansu, with multiple drawers, two central sliding doors and a lower cabinet with latticework. The front is richly equipped with dark iron hardware, including corner fittings, plate hinges, handles and decorative reinforcements.
The cabinet is made in light and relatively soft Japanese wood sugi (Japanese cedar) in combination with hinoki (Japanese cypress) and/or other traditional Japanese softwoods. The dark reddish-brown finish contrasts nicely with the black iron hardware.
Notably is the combination of the large number of drawers and compartments with the central sliding doors. The cabinet also has a hidden/secret compartment, characteristic of some Japanese tansu.
The back consists of broad vertical solid wood sections and clearly shows the traditional construction method. The drawers and other interior parts are lighter in color than the exterior.
The cabinet is in good, restored condition with age- and use-related traces appropriate to its age. Scratches, discolorations, wear and small irregularities in the wood are part of its historic character. See the photos for an accurate impression.
A decorative and functional Japanese antique cabinet with a particularly architectural front and beautiful traditional iron hardware.
