Item Description
This is a lacquered commemorative telegram box produced by NTT, decorated with a pair of flying cranes over pine branches and scattered plum blossoms rendered in gold and silver maki-e style on a glossy black lacquer ground. The interior is lined with deep blue fabric, making the box suitable for use as a small keepsake or jewellery box, or for storing letters and small documents.
The cranes (tsuru) and pine (matsu) motifs are traditional Japanese symbols of longevity and good fortune, commonly used on ceremonial and celebratory items such as this telegram presentation box.
The box has never been used; it was only opened for photography. Light handling marks consistent with storage are visible on the lacquer surface, as shown in the photographs.
