AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Japanese hanging scroll – Bijin-ga with kind of pop – Taisho

Antique Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) with a long, slender bijin-ga depiction of an elegantly dressed woman holding a child or possibly a traditional doll in her arms.

Executed in ink and color on silk and mounted as a traditional hanging scroll. The yellow kimono is richly decorated with stylized waves and a partially visible wagon wheel, related to the classic Japanese katawaguruma motif. The figure in her arms wears a dark garment with striking vermilion-red circular motifs.

The refined outlines, hairstyle, and clothing stylistically align with the Japanese ukiyo-e/bijin-ga tradition of the 19th century. Probably late Edo to early Meiji period. No clearly legible signature or artist’s seal found; maker unknown.

Dimensions: overall hanging scroll ca. 135.5 × 27.4 cm.
Inner frame / painted scene: ca. 57 × 17 cm.

The scroll is in a clearly used, authentically aged condition, with yellowing, wear, creases, small damages and old repairs on the back. The mounting and wooden scroll rod also show signs of age. See the photos for a good impression of the condition.

Japan, presumably 19th century – late Edo/early Meiji.
