Item Description
This is a Japanese three-tiered jubako (stacking lacquerware box), a traditional vessel historically used for presenting osechi ryori (New Year's celebratory cuisine) and festive dishes. The exterior features a deep black lacquer finish, with a flowing golden pine motif (in the style of maki-e) extending across the lid and all three tiers, designed so that when stacked, the decoration forms a single continuous composition. A small red seal mark is visible on the lid, though it was not possible to identify the maker with certainty.
The interior of each tier is finished in red lacquer, a traditional contrasting treatment characteristic of this type of lacquerware. The set comprises a lid and three stackable tiers, each of which can be removed individually for serving, and the whole rests upon a shaped black lacquer stand.
Purchased new and unused for its intended purpose. Minor scuffs and handling marks from storage are visible on the plain black lacquer areas (sides and back), though the front panels bearing the golden pine motif remain in good presentable condition.
