Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) is one of the most influential American artists of the postwar period. As early as the 1950s, he began to dissolve the traditional boundaries between painting and sculpture. He became famous especially for his so-called Combines, in which he combined painting with photographs, newspaper clippings, and found everyday objects. Later, he transferred this principle to his prints and developed innovative works with silkscreen, lithography, photography, and collage.
Rauschenberg's art played a decisive role in paving the way for Neo-Dada and Pop Art. Rather than drawing a distinction between high art and everyday visual culture, he made their interaction the starting point of his art. In 1964 he received the International Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale, thereby consolidating his central position in postwar American art on an international level.
