A tall six-panel Japanese folding screen in excellent condition dating to the Late Edo period, 174.2 cm high by 374 cm wide, with a Rinpa School gold-ground painting of a chrysanthemum garden on mulberry paper, finished in lacquered wood with silk brocade trims and a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A beautiful tall six-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) featuring a refined Kanô School 狩野派 (Kanô-ha) style painting of a lush chrysanthemum garden set within an idyllic landscape.
On the left, abundant chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) in white, yellow and deep red bloom behind bamboo fencing and beneath a protective mat of thin bamboo canes, with several flowers extending above and through it. The thicker horizontal rails of the fence are highlighted with silver leaf, now attractively oxidised with age. Small crickets are carefully depicted among the plants.
Across the composition rises a large, leaning pine tree 松 (matsu), with a bird prominently perched on one of its outstretched branches. Around its base are rock formations, dwarf bamboo 笹 (sasa) and a flowering plum tree 梅 (ume).
The landscape is unified by a broad gold-leaf ground, with stylised golden clouds and areas of finely speckled mist running through the foreground.
The chrysanthemum flower heads are finely heightened in low relief with gofun 胡粉, a traditional white pigment prepared from finely powdered seashell, adding subtle texture and dimension.
Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold and silver leaf. The painting is bordered by two patterned silk brocade trims and set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with ornate gilt-metal protective mounts.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (second half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Total width 374 cm (2 × 64 cm and 4 × 61.5 cm); Height 174.2 cm.
Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. There are some touch-ups to the gold leaf on the front and several repapered patches to the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
