The painting depicts, in half-figure and profile, an elderly traveler, characterized by a dry and intensely expressive face, covered by a wide dark hat and wrapped in a mantle. The figure stands out against a minimalist landscape, built through earthy tones and a light sky with a particularly evident painterly texture.
The work shows some elements characteristic of Luigi Michelacci’s research, a painter trained in the Tuscan milieu and a pupil of Giovanni Fattori. Michelacci assimilated the Macchiaioli lesson, later opening himself to the influences of French painting, the Barbizon school and especially to the chiaroscuro and expressive force of Honoré Daumier.
In this painting the attention is focused above all on the psychological characterization of the character. The face, marked by age and life, is constructed through dense and vigorous brushstrokes, with strong contrasts between the illuminated areas of the forehead, nose and cheekbones and the deep shadows produced by the hat.
Particularly interesting is the substantial painterly matter, clearly perceptible in the sky and the light areas of the landscape. This is an element that resonates in Michelacci’s production: Treccani notes that in works from 1925 to 1930 the artist used a particularly substantial painterly matter, sometimes resorting to transparent varnishes to obtain relief effects.
