“Child”

Russian-Soviet painting of the 20th century
An interesting early work by Jurij Dvoretskij, realized in 1947, depicting a young boy seated, caught in a moment of natural introspection.
The painting stands out for its immediate and vigorous painting, built through rapid and textural brushstrokes. The boy’s face constitutes the emotional core of the composition: the eyes turned slightly to the side and the absorbed expression confer considerable psychological intensity to the portrait.
The palette alternates warm tones of flesh, obtained through overlays of pink, ochre and browns, with the dark tones of the jacket, brightened by the intense blue of the shirt. The deliberately concise stroke and some parts left in a sketch-like state emphasize the spontaneous character of the execution and focus attention on the young man’s face.
The work belongs to the Russian and Soviet figurative culture of the post-war period and represents an interesting testimony to the artist’s painting research in the field of portraiture.
