Antique Asian sewing box in dark lacquered wood with gilded relief decoration, brass fittings and a gold-coloured brocade pincushion on top, dimensions 38 × 22 × 15 cm, dating to circa 1870–1900, in authentic unrestored condition with age and use marks.
Description from the seller
Exceptionally beautiful and unique Asian sewing box / hobby chest with relief decoration, brass fittings, gold-colored brocade and a small decorative image on the lid ca. 1870–1900
Special traditional sewing box / sewing chest, made of dark lacquered wood and richly decorated with gold-colored landscape representations in relief, raised relief decoration, and engraved brass fittings.
Notably, parts of the decoration are not only painted but also raised and rendered in relief. Especially the buildings, trees, mountains and rock formations therefore have a strongly three-dimensional character. This gives the box a particularly artisanal and skilled decorative appearance.
The box is fitted with richly worked brass fittings, including a decorative lock plate, graceful hinges and corner fittings.
On the top is a large integrated pincushion, lined with gold-colored brocade, presumably silk. The fabric shows wear consistent with age and use.
Inside there is a small, finely hand-painted scene of a woman at a table with textiles or handiwork.
This fits particularly well with the original function of the object as a sewing box or handiwork chest.
On the basis of design, materials, lacquer work, fittings and decorative execution, the object is stylistically presumed to be circa 1870–1900.
According to family tradition, the box was purchased in the late 1960s from an antiquarian in Seoul, South Korea, and has remained within the same family since, with the mother using it as a footstool.
