Hoozuki-shaped kogo incense container in red lacquer by Yōjin, signed and original, with a tomobako box; 8 cm high, 4 cm wide, 4.5 cm deep, weight 11 g, dating 1900–2000, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a kōgō (incense container) crafted in the form of a hōzuki (Chinese lantern plant), a beloved symbol of the seasons. The work is by lacquer artist Yōjin, and comes with a tomobako (wooden box signed by the artist).
The hollow vessel, which separates into two halves, faithfully reproduces the contours of an actual hōzuki berry, with the dried slender stem preserved intact at the top. The exterior is finished in a deep red lacquer that renders the ribbed, vein-like texture of a real hōzuki calyx, while the interior is adorned with a gold-toned lacquer, creating a striking contrast when the lid is opened.
Kōgō of this kind are traditionally used in the tea ceremony to hold incense, and designs evoking the seasons — such as the hōzuki motif — are particularly prized at autumn tea gatherings. This piece is equally suited to practical use in the tea room and to display as a decorative object that captures the feeling of the season.
