The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch "From the Moon to Mars" (ref. 3577.50.00) is a numbered edition; each specimen bears on the case back its own progressive serial number. Because Omega does not officially disclose production data for these numbered series, there is no definitive 100% figure. However, experts and the collector community estimate that during its entire production run (roughly 2004–2012) about 6,000 pieces were produced in total. The Omega Speedmaster Professional "From the Moon to Mars" was introduced in 2004 at Baselworld, the World Watch and Jewellery Show. The watch was produced to celebrate and commemorate NASA's new space exploration plans announced at that time. In early 2004, the United States government had proclaimed a new and ambitious vision for the future of aerospace, which included: the return of humans to the Moon with the construction of a permanent lunar base, and the use of the lunar station as a fundamental launching point for future crewed missions directed toward Mars. Omega, closely tied to NASA since the Apollo missions of 1969, wanted to pay homage to this ideal "space relay" by personalizing the Moonwatch dial: the three traditional chronograph subdials actually feature photorealistic prints of Earth, the Moon, and Mars, graphically symbolizing the planned journey to the Red Planet. I should point out that this model, being a New Old Stock, has a current value much higher than a comparable used watch; this specimen, in my view, is a unique watch on the web and is a guaranteed investment for Omega collectors.
