This painting by Carl Deelsbo shows a seated female nude in a carefully constructed, decorative setting. The figure is depicted monumentally and nearly fills the entire picture plane, while her bent posture and downcast gaze give the portrayal a calm, restrained atmosphere. The artist uses subdued pinks, ochers, greens and greys and models the body with soft transitions of light and shadow. Notably, the geometric patterns on either side of the figure form a decorative contrast with the organic lines of the body. This gives the work, alongside its figurative character, a strong sense of form, rhythm and color.
Carl Nicolaus Persson Deelsbo (1892–1990) was a Swedish artist and art teacher. He studied at Althins målarskola and the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm and stayed for further study in, among others, Paris, Italy and Dresden. Deelsbo worked as a painter, sculptor and graphic artist and founded his own art and advertising school in Stockholm. His oeuvre mainly consists of landscapes, figure studies and portraits. His work is represented, among others, in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
