AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful authentic etching by Jakob Smits, Belgian and Dutch school, late 19th century

Original, rare etching by the renowned Dutch-Belgian master Jakob Smits, worldwide famed for his poetic and melancholic depiction of the simple Kempen (Campine) rural life.

The scene shows a characteristic Kempen farm interior/yard with a straw-thatched farmhouse, a prominent well and gallows in the background, and a wooden cart in the foreground. On the left stand a bowed woman and a child close to each other, captured in an intimate and everyday moment. The bold, dark cross-hatching gives the work its characteristic depth and atmospheric calm for which Smits is known.

• Signature: Bottom right, fully signed in pencil by the artist (Jakob Smits).
• Numbering: Bottom left, numbered in pencil: 38/80 (limited edition)
• Paper: Printed on high-quality, handmade paper
• Print: Clear and deep plate edge visible.
• Paper size: H 23.9 cm / W 32.8 cm
• Image dimensions (plate edge): 9.5 x 12.9 cm
• Condition: Generally good. There is a very light, subtle crease in the paper next to the image, but it is hardly noticeable and does not detract from the work’s appearance at all.

Jakob Smits is regarded as one of the leading pioneers of pre-expressionism in Belgium. His graphic work and etchings are highly prized by collectors. Early, hand-signed prints of this quality are still rarely seen on the market.
