Description from the seller

Marie Alphonse Mucha:
Title: “Affiche pour les Amants, 1895”.
Signed on the plate.
Color offset lithography, issued in 1997 by Taschen.
Condition: the work is in very good condition.

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is one of the undisputed masters of Art Nouveau and a fundamental figure in the history of decorative modern art. His instantly recognizable style, characterized by elegant female figures, flowing lines, ornamental halos, and rich botanical motifs, has become synonymous with fin-de-siècle Paris and the rise of graphic art as a consolidated discipline.

Mucha’s works enjoy enduring international demand, with high prices for posters, lithographs, and decorative panels, appealing equally to fine-art enthusiasts, design fans, and interior stylists.

Among Mucha’s posters for the Théâtre de la Renaissance, this work occupies a special position. Unlike the tall, extremely narrow format of “Gismonda,” the painter here chose a horizontal rectangle. The scene, which is usually filled with a static image of Sarah Bernhardt, is enlivened here by a tableau of turbulence. Mucha’s preference for a composition with emphasised planes is abandoned in favor of a kind of three-dimensional, offset composition. In the background, a group of children looks toward a puppet theater, while in the foreground a refined company occupies itself with the social bustle.

The atmosphere of the elegant ballroom, together with contemporary fashion, evokes the decadent, elegant flair of the Belle Époque. Mucha himself was a welcome guest in the Parisian salons, and the vibe there was a source of inspiration for his art. Moreover, posters around the turn of the century enjoyed unprecedented popularity, especially in Paris, and more aesthetic value was attributed than before. Mucha was also influenced by the psychologically powerful works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and other Art Nouveau artists. Through effective staging, the depiction of dramatic movements, and the set designs, theater proved an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Mucha’s art.

From a market and collecting perspective, Mucha sits beside other highly sought-after names in modern and decorative art, such as Gustav Klimt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Egon Schiele and Aubrey Beardsley, while also resonating with collectors of broader modern and contemporary icons such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Keith Haring, Banksy and Jeff Koons. His work frequently appears in searches related to Art Nouveau interiors, vintage posters, luxury furnishings, Belle Époque aesthetics, history of graphic design, and collectible prints.

Never previously framed and kept in a dark archival storage space between protective acid-free paper.
