Description from the seller
*A magnificent and exceptionally complete set of two antique Chinese water pipes (tobacco pipes) from the late Qing dynasty / early Republic period (circa 1900).*
Both pipes are in a remarkably complete condition, including the original loose components such as the funnel-shaped tobacco bowls, the stems, and the ash-prickers on chains. This kind of refined smoking paraphernalia was used in China around the turn of the century for smoking finely chopped tobacco.
1. Red Porcelain Water Pipe with a Mark
Hand-painted porcelain with thick enamel colors (famille rose / wucai) and a patinated brass mount.
Central decorated with the white-red 'Shou' medallion (symbol of a long life), surrounded by longevity peaches and two carp (symbol of abundance and marital happiness).
On the underside is the four-character iron-red seal mark "慎德堂製" (Shende Tang Zhi - 'Made for the Hall of Cultivation of Virtue').
Very good. A minuscule superficial glaze spot on the front (see photos), appropriate for its age. Fully functional and complete with all loose metal components.
2. Bamboo-shaped Water Pipe made of Bone/Horn
Made from authentic animal bone (bovine bone) with a beautifully patinated bronze/brass mount and an elegantly shaped handle.
The base is hand-carved in the shape of a natural bamboo stalk, a traditional Chinese symbol for flexibility and steadfastness. The metalwork features refined floral reliefs and cloud patterns.
Excellent antique condition. The bone shows a beautiful natural patina with light age veins.
A splendid, complementary pair for the serious collector of Asia/antiques or tobacciana. Will of course be packaged with utmost care and shipped by registered mail.
