Description from the seller

Up for auction:

A beautiful and highly authentic antique meerschaum tobacco pipe (the so-called Gesteckpfeife or Sackpfeife) from the Biedermeier period (ca. 1840–1860).
This modular pipe was in the 19th century a beloved status symbol among the well-to-do bourgeoisie in Central Europe (Germany / Austria-Hungary).
The regal, smooth pipe head is made from high-quality natural meerschaum (magnesite) and has, through decades of historical use, developed a splendid, deep golden to honey-brown patina.
The meerschaum is completely intact with no cracks or restorations.
The interior shows an authentic patina of historical use.
The head is fitted with high-quality silverwork (or high-carrier silver-plated white metal).
The wind cap is a beautiful example of craftsmanship, featuring a very fine, hand-cut ajour pattern (clover/flower motif) for the air intake and an elegantly curled thumb rest.
The pipe is equipped with the original rustic cherry wood stem (Weichselholz) with the natural bark and knots still beautifully preserved.
The stem ends in a two-piece, screw-on mouthpiece made of authentic black horn.
A splendid and complete collectible for the lover of historical smoking antiques and 19th-century applied arts.
