Paul Combrink (1946) - Plaats 6

The Hague-based artist Paul Combrink paints abstract, geometric planes in a subdued color palette. He places them on a white, or nearly white background, on which the planes, despite their uniformity and angularity, interact with one another and a rhythm arises. Despite their abstraction, they originate from patterns from Combrink's daily environment, such as curtain fabric. On b toys the pattern of squares, tightly framed with painter's tape, is placed as a second border around the photo of a rather unhappy boy with his toy train. As if it were a two-dimensional depiction of a building-block set. With this fascination for the abstract, Combrink lives in the right city: no Dutch city cherishes geometric art like The Hague does.
