Winters stadsgezicht is an oil painting on canvas from the 19th century (1881) originating in the Netherlands and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Petrus Gerardus Vertin (1819–1893) – Winter cityscape
Oil painting on canvas by Petrus Gerardus Vertin (The Hague, 1819–1893), a prominent Dutch painter within the Hague Romanticism.
Vertin studied at the The Hague Academy and specialized in Dutch urban landscapes and street scenes. He painted both summer and winter scenes. His cityscapes are sometimes topographically recognizable, but often composed of existing and imagined architecture. Especially his winter scenes are characteristic of his oeuvre. Vertin paid much attention to the way light behaves on snow-covered roofs, facades, window frames and streets. This painting is a fine example: a lively winter street scene with monumental façades, figures and a strong sense of depth toward the passage in the background.
The combination of warm brick tones, the winter street scene and the light sky creates a atmospheric composition with a lot of detail.
