The Meisterstück, which means “masterpiece” in German, lives up to its name with magnificent craftsmanship. Since its creation, this fountain pen has been one of the most desired writing items. Today, this companion for visionaries, dreamers, and ambitious people remains an icon of writing.
Engraving “Montblanc Meisterstück Pix” on the cap band. Pix refers to the fact that the pen was manufactured from 1997 onward. In that year, Montblanc began stamping that word in an almost imperceptible way on its pens as a seal of authenticity to combat counterfeiting. Originally, “Pix” was the commercial name patented by Montblanc in the 1930s to refer exclusively to its revolutionary automatic multi-function pencils with a repeating mechanism (which produced a sound similar to a “click” or “pix” when the mechanical button was pressed). Over the decades, the brand adopted the word as a corporate symbol of manufacturing and intellectual property.
The cap and the reservoir are crafted from precious black resin and the iconic white Montblanc emblem is inlaid at the very top of the cap. The fountain pen features the emblematic 14k gold hand-cut nib. Interestingly, this nib is carved by the brand’s artisans with gold sheets, in a process that comprises 35 steps.

The company was founded in 1906, when August Eberstein, a designer, and Alfred Nehemias, a banker, created its first line of fountain pens. Although they initially produced simple fountain pens, they gradually shifted toward luxury pen production, and thus in 1908 came the “Rouge et Noir,” Montblanc’s first luxury fountain pen.
From then on, Montblanc continued to expand its line of fountain pens. In 1924 they released the renowned Meisterstück, which today remains the most famous fountain pen of all time. With this, Montblanc established itself as a manufacturer and distributor of luxury goods, including writing instruments, watches, bags, leather goods, jewelry, fragrances, and other accessories.
After World War II, a period of reconstruction and innovation followed in the late 1940s, and Montblanc’s artisans chose a new, much more streamlined look for the Meisterstück: the iconic pure form. In 1949, Montblanc introduced a trio of models: the 142, the 144, and the 146. Three years later, a new size of the Meisterstück was launched, the iconic 149.
