Description from the seller

Our Struggle in Southwest Celebes up to 1838 and the lessons to be drawn from it is a comprehensive military-historic book written by G. Nijpels, at the time captain of the General Staff of the East Indies Army (KNIL). The work was published in 1902 in two parts by the Javaanse Boekhandel en Drukkerij in Batavia (present-day Jakarta). The book offers a detailed look at the early colonial military history of the Netherlands in the present-day Sulawesi (then called Celebes).

Contents: Nijpels describes and analyzes the various Dutch punitive expeditions and military confrontations in the Southwest Celebes region that took place up to the year 1838. This includes, among other things, conflicts with local kingdoms such as Boni (Bone) and Tanette.

Purpose: As the title indicates, the book was not only intended as historical writing, but explicitly as a strategic manual (the lessons to be drawn from it) for officers within the KNIL. It was meant to provide military personnel with insights into guerrilla tactics, terrain conditions, and effective warfare in the archipelago.

Sources: Militaire Spectator, DBNL - Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren & Mars et Historica - Nederlandse Vereniging voor Militaire Historie.

Rare issue, rarely or never offered for sale.

Bound in a half-linen private binding with light damage, gold lettering on the spine. Name and year of the previous owner on the front flyleaf. Accompanying map (unfortunately) bound in as well. As a result, it does not fold out well. See the photos. Complete edition.

Sent by registered mail and well packaged.
