1984 Aligi Sassu. Catalog of the engraved and lithographic works, 1984, edited by Paolo Bellini with introduction by Erich Steingräber, Giorgio Mondadori & Associati, reg. 589
Printer: La Tavolozza, Milan
Publisher: Torcular, Trezzano sul Naviglio
The work originally formed part of the volume 'Apocalypse' containing an etching and 6 lithographs by Aligi Sassu
Aligi Sassu was born in Milan on July 17, 1912, to Lina Pedretti, from Parma, and Antonio Sassu, one of the founders of the Socialist Party of Sassari.
In 1921 the family moved to Thiesi, Sardinia, and stayed there for three years, a brief but fundamental period for the artist’s sensibilities.
It is here that he encountered horses and the strong colors of the Mediterranean landscape. Returning to Milan, he was excited by Futurist magazines and texts, an interest his father instilled in him, who in 1919 took him at age seven to visit the first Futurist collective at the Cova.
This is not, however, his first contact with the movement, given the father’s friendship with Carlo Carrà. It is precisely in this period that he first experiments with color.
In 1925 economic difficulties forced him to leave school to work as an apprentice in a lithographic workshop, the Pressa; the following year he works as an assistant to a mural decorator. He does manage to complete evening studies.
In 1927 he buys
