Italian antique concert guitar Romantica 1890 Antica, wood construction, origin Italy, 96 cm high, 27.5 cm long and 34.5 cm wide, functional.
Description from the seller
Antique Romantic guitar of the 19th century, Florence. Pilade Maurri Italian antique concert guitar, with original label.. Florence, Piazza S. Croce 6, 1880 1890
Called the GUITAR THAT LAUGHS, for its smile-shaped bridge.
Made with a spruce top and back and ribbing in walnut.
The construction features the typical characteristics of Tuscan lutherie of the era: spruce soundboard, rosette with concentric rings, original shaped bridge and an octocentury-style pegbox.
The patina of the wood, wear consistent with the age, testifies to the authenticity and the collecting interest of the instrument.
Together with his brother Pilade he opened a shop specializing in music publishing and a business manufacturing mandolins, mandolettes and guitars in Florence. The labels of the Maurri mandolins record the existence of a shop in Via delle Farine, No. 2 and a workshop in Piazza S. Croce, No. 6.
The Maurri company printed a vast catalog of instrumental works for plucked instruments, which today constitutes the Maurri Collection (Ed. Curci). The Raffaello Maurri establishment was later taken over by Carlo Schmidl in 1923.[1]
According to musicologist Paul Sparks (1995), the Maurri luthiers are credited with inventing the so-called "Tuscan" or "Florentine" mandolin, characterized by a different inclination of the soundboard and by a number of double or single courses varying between 4 and 5.
Very good conditions and functional, a slight thread on one rib as shown in the photographs that are an integral part of the description and on the back it is marked but this is part of the restoration that was done and also refinished.
Total measurement 96 cm with the case; the upper part is 27.5 cm wide and the lower part is 34.5 cm wide.
Fretboard: two brass frets are missing and a nut/peg is missing.
Rare piece.. good lot.
