A Japanese cloisonné vase from the Meiji period (late 19th century) on a dark aventurine ground, 31 cm tall and 16 cm in diameter, decorated with a sinuous dragon and ho-o phoenixes with karakusa scrolls, in good condition with minor enamel loss at the neck rim and two marks on the aventurine body, with the original certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A cloisonné vase on a dark aventurine ground, creating a deep and shimmering effect, decorated with a sinuous dragon. The creature’s body unfolds dynamically around the surface of the vase, with sharp claws, finely detailed scales, and long flowing whiskers, while the face is rendered with expressive eyes and open jaws.
Around the neck are decorative reserves featuring dragons and hō-ō phoenixes, while the upper section is adorned with a dense karakusa 唐草 scroll motif on a light ground. A polychrome floral border runs along the base.
Japanese cloisonné is one of the most refined forms of decorative art. Originally adopted from China, the technique was perfected by Japanese artisans during the Meiji period. The technique involves the use of vibrant polychrome enamels that create a metallic, glossy effect.
The vase is in good condition with a small loss to the enamel along the rim of the neck (photo 12), together with two marks on the aventurine ground of the body (photo 14). Please refer to the pictures for further details.
---The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL express or FedEx.
The original certificate of authenticity issued by our gallery will be provided to the buyer.
