Description from the seller

Pieter Bas Bouwman — Skin
Pieter Bas Bouwman (American-born Dutch artist, b. 1990)
Skin
Signed on back
Edition: 1st of 5
Fine art photography
50 × 75 cm
Framed with Museum Glass

Skin was created during Pieter Bas Bouwman’s stay in the south of Kenya during ga three month period documenting the conflict between humans and animals along with the Maasai Community. The work was later exhibited at Haute Photographie in the Netherlands.

Skin explores the fragile relationship between humanity, nature and the landscapes we alter.
In the work, a group of elephants appears to merge with a cracked, weathered surface. The texture of their skin becomes almost indistinguishable from the surrounding landscape. Animal and earth seem to share the same skin, both marked by time, vulnerability and external forces.

The work reflects on the human impact on the natural world without depicting that intervention literally. Instead, Bouwman creates an image in which boundaries begin to dissolve: between animal and landscape, figure and surface, preservation and disappearance.

The restrained black-and-white palette and layered composition give the image an almost archival quality, while the cracked surface physically and visually connects the elephants to their environment.
