The original line drawing of a woman with a jug was made in 1921 by Pablo Picasso, as part of his transition toward a more figurative style.
After the First World War society longed for the stability and the proven value of tradition after the slaughter caused by the conflict. This gave rise to a new art movement, known as 'the return to order', which was characterized by a return to more traditional approaches to art. This led Picasso to temporarily abandon his avant-garde style.
