Description from the seller

Louis-Philippe. Royal Ordinance on the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Infantry, of 4 March 1831. Paris, Anselin, 1831, xlviii-211 pp., 31 pp., 24 pp.; 238 pp., 241 pp., 159 pp.

3 volumes in-12 (145x90 mm), half calf, smooth spine ornately decorated, title and volume labels in black morocco (bindings of the period). Wear and rubbing on the covers and spine, top edge of volume III partially shaved. Sporadic foxing.

Original edition; complete with the 64 plates hors texte and the 3 volumes (one tear on a plate)

Official regulation promulgated under the reign of Louis-Philippe I to establish the instruction, organization and maneuvers of the French infantry. Intended for officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers, it replaces earlier regulations in order to adapt the army’s training to the requirements of the July Monarchy.

The work is divided into several parts devoted successively to the soldier’s school, the platoon school, the battalion school, the instruction of tirailleurs and the evolutions of line. It describes with precision the movements, formations, commands, weapons exercises and the discipline rules to be applied uniformly in all infantry regiments.

abundantly illustrated with explanatory plates, the regulation details formations in column and in line, changes of direction, deployments, tactical movements as well as methods of deployment of tirailleurs. It constitutes the reference text for the instruction of the French infantry during the early years of the July Monarchy.
