AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Duingezicht II is an oil painting by Martin van Waning (1887–1972). The broad dune landscape is composed of rolling sand dunes and densely vegetated areas with marram grass and low shrubs. The foreground is painted boldly and thickly in green, ochre, brown and sandy tones. Toward the distance, color and brushwork become lighter, giving the landscape a clear depth. Above the low horizon stretches a wide blue-gray sky with substantial white cloud formations and a few birds.

Dimensions of the work: 40 × 60 cm. Including frame: 54 × 74 cm.

Artist biography
Martin van Waning (The Hague, 1887 – Dokkum, 1972) was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, sculptor and medalist. He studied painting with Charles Dankmeijer and Willem de Zwart and subsequently stayed and worked, among others, in Germany. Travels through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa broadened his scope. In 1917 he returned to the Netherlands and from 1934 he lived and worked on Schiermonnikoog, where the island and dune landscape became an important subject in his oeuvre. His painting shows the influence of the Hague School and is characterized by attention to space, light and cloud skies. During World War II his studio on Schiermonnikoog was bombed, resulting in a substantial part of his oeuvre being lost. In 1961 he created for the island the statue of the Grey Monk.
