Description from the seller
Duingezicht I is a oil painting by Martin van Waning (1887–1972). The landscape shows a densely vegetated dune area, composed of sandy slopes, marram grass and low dune vegetation. Van Waning painted the foreground with a strong, locally thick impasto, alternating deep greens and browns with ochre, sand tones and small reddish accents. To the right, the landscape opens to a low, hazy horizon, where buildings are visible in the distance. The softly painted blue-gray sky forms a calm contrast with the richly textured foreground. Signed lower right: Martin van Waning.
Dimensions of the work: 40 × 60 cm. Including frame: 42 × 62 cm.
Artist biography
Martin van Waning (The Hague, 1887 – Dokkum, 1972) was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, sculptor and medallist. He took painting lessons from Charles Dankmeijer and Willem de Zwart and subsequently lived and worked in Germany among other places. Travels through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa broadened his artistic scope. In 1917 he returned to the Netherlands and from 1934 he lived and worked on Schiermonnikoog, where the island and dune landscape became an important subject in his oeuvre. His painting shows the influence of the Hague School, with particular attention to landscape, space, light and atmosphere. During World War II a substantial part of his oeuvre was lost in a bombardment of his studio on Schiermonnikoog. In 1961 he created the statue of the Schiere Monnik for the island.
