"Drafty Canvas 1" (Grogland Project)

"There are emotions that arrive before words. When that happens, I grab the Grog and start."

The gesture becomes my first response to what I feel.
Grogland stems from the desire to make my relationship with the canvas more direct, instinctive, and immediate. In this project I use Grog markers, tools born in the writing environment and designed to leave a quick, decisive mark, for tagging and for intervention in urban space. It is precisely this nature of the tool that changes my way of confronting the canvas.
Facing the canvas I try to behave as if I were standing in front of a wall on the street. I no longer want the gesture to be excessively methodical, constructed, or calculated. I want it to arise from impulse. I have to intervene, take space, move before thought can fully control what I am doing. What I feel enters directly into the pressure of the marker, into the speed of the movement, into the overlaps, interruptions, and the decision to continue or stop.
My mark originates in 2019, on small notepads in the back of the bar where I worked. I drew in moments of waiting, letting my hand spontaneously repeat certain movements. Over time that gesture became a personal language. In Grogland that same language is subjected to a new condition: less control and greater urgency.
The Grog thus becomes my expressive weapon. A tool born for a quick, urban, and often clandestine gesture is brought onto the canvas. And it is precisely this contrast that interests me: something belonging to the street enters a support historically linked to painting and potentially destined for a gallery, an exhibition, or a museum space. Two seemingly distant environments end up meeting in the same work.
"Drafty Canvas 1" arises from this confrontation. I do not necessarily start from a precise image or a predetermined result. I begin because I feel the need to let something out. The meaning can arrive later, when I step away from the canvas and observe what the gesture produced.
Irregularities, overlaps, runs, and variations of the mark are not elements to be corrected: they are the recording of the moment when the work was created. They remain on the surface as a physical consequence of the impulse.
Grogland is the space I give to this way of expressing myself: bringing the street’s attitude onto the canvas without turning it into a mere quotation of writing. I do not seek to reproduce a wall on a canvas. I seek to transfer onto the canvas the same mental state: immediacy, risk, instinct, and the need to leave a trace.

I have an emotion. I take the Grog. I bring it to the canvas.
From there the work begins.

BIO:

I am Pietro Fight, an Italian visual artist based in Milan. My research revolves around the writing of gesture: an abstract language made of marks, circles, filled and empty shapes that repeat and transform from one work to another. Through my paintings I try to tell my way of seeing life and my artistic path, working on the relationship between density and breath, weight and space. Each work is unique and arises from a manual process made of rhythm, repetition, and ever-changing variations.
