Description from the seller
Kontrast is an oil painting on canvas from 1992 by Kuno Schiefer (1948–1992). The abstract composition is built from large, organically shaped fields of color in intense blue, turquoise, pink, and bright red. Against the deep blue background long, elongated forms and diagonals cross each other, while round and jagged elements create a lively rhythm. In the lower section the composition concentrates into a layered interplay of pink and blue-gray shapes. The paint is applied predominantly in flat layers, with the texture of the canvas locally still visible.
Bottom-left signed Kuno Schiefer. On the back in pencil are the title Kontrast, the dimensions 50 × 65 cm, the name of the artist and the year 1992. Dimensions including frame: 51 × 66 cm. Provenance: estate of the Kuno Schiefer family. The work is accompanied by a book about the artist.
Artist biography
Kuno Schiefer (Stuttgart, 1948 – São José dos Campos, 1992) was a German painter and graphic artist who developed his artistic career largely in Brazil. In 1963 he moved to Brazil and from 1964 to 1968 he attended the Escola de Belas Artes in São José dos Campos. His oeuvre includes paintings, drawings and graphic art and developed from figuration towards an increasingly freer abstract visual language in which nature and vegetation formed important starting points. Schiefer exhibited, among others, at Galeria do Sol in São Paulo, Galeria Saramenha in Rio de Janeiro and Galerie Redmann in Berlin. In 1988 his work was presented at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). His colorful, organic compositions from the later period show the strong influence that the Brazilian landscape and flora exerted on his work.
