Description from the seller
This silkscreen by Norbert Francis Attard, titled Jail in Paradise and dated 1977, shows a compact walled city that is presented from an elevated vantage point as if it were an architectural model. Within the heavy walls stands a densely packed collection of angular houses, towers, staircases and passages, executed in a limited palette of earthy brown and beige tones. The meticulous patterns of bricks, dots and lines give the scene a great deal of structure, while the absence of human figures evokes a quiet and somewhat claustrophobic atmosphere. The title Jail in Paradise furthermore introduces a contrast between protection and captivity: the walls offer safety, but at the same time close the city off from the outside world. The strong emphasis on architecture, spatial arrangement, and geometric forms aligns closely with Attard's background as an architect.
Norbert Francis Attard (Sliema, Malta, 1951) is a Maltese artist and architect who began his career as a self-taught painter and graphic artist. He graduated in 1977 in architecture from the University of Malta and subsequently worked for about twenty years as an architect; his interest in space, geometry and built environments is also clearly recognizable in his early graphic work. Later his work shifted toward conceptual and installation art, combining photography, video, sculpture and architecture and exploring themes such as place, memory and the history of sites. In 1999 Attard represented Malta at the 48th Venice Biennale. Today he is connected with GOZO Contemporary and Valletta Contemporary, among others.
