Gerard Verdijk's oil painting Abstraherend landschap is an original framed work from the 1960s, measuring 35 × 65 cm (frame approx. 45 × 75 × 4 cm), unsigned, depicting an abstract landscape in an expressionist style with a dominant dark blue vertical form as an anchor and a palette of light blue, gray-green, white with accents of orange, pink, turquoise and deep blue.
Description from the seller
Abstract landscape in which recognizable architectural and landscape elements dissolve into a free, highly painterly composition. The image is built up from overlapping color fields, irregular contours, and linear accents. A powerful dark blue vertical form to the left of center serves as a visual anchor, while lighter areas of white, blue, and light green open the composition to the right.
Verdijk combines a thick, relief-like paint handling with thinner passages, drips, splashes and graphically inclined lines. The palette is dominated by light blue, gray-green and off-white, with vibrant accents in orange, pink, turquoise and deep blue. The alternation between densely painted areas and more open surfaces gives the work a pronounced stratification. Executed as an oil painting. The work measures about 35 × 65 cm and is offered framed, with a total size of about 45 × 75 × 4 cm.
Artist Biography
Gerard Verdijk (Boxmeer, 1934 – The Hague, 2005) belongs to the generation of Dutch artists who, from the late 1950s, sought connection with informal art. He was active within the renewed Hague art climate and joined the artists’ group Fugare, which also included Jaap Nanninga and Willem Hussem. His oeuvre developed from material, spontaneous painting to compositions in which signs, space, movement and balance increasingly played a role. Verdijk had solo presentations at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in 1972 and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1993. The Dordrechts Museum, which owns an extensive collection of his paintings, drawings, graphics and objects, dedicated a retrospective to his oeuvre in 2016–2017.
