Description from the seller
This abstract oil painting by Ernst van Leyden (1892–1969) dates from 1958.
Against a predominantly blue-gray background, transparent and opaque geometric planes are placed in broken white, light blue, and pale yellow. Over them run bold dark gray brushstrokes and finer linear contours. The diagonal and curved bands cross at the center, giving the otherwise restrained composition a pronounced rhythm and tension. Due to the thin layers of paint and local transparency, the structure of the canvas remains visible.
Signed and dated lower left: Leyden 58. On the reverse are various handwritten inscriptions. Dimensions of the work: 118 × 92 cm. Including frame: 137 × 110 cm.
