Excellent condition Meiji period six-panel Byōbu with gold leaf on paper, depicting a Rakuchū Rakugai-zu view of Kyoto with Nijō Castle, measuring 271 cm wide by 122 cm high (depth 2 cm) and accompanied by an original certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
An unusual size gold leaf and painted Japanese six-panel folding screen, depicting a beautiful city view with numerous houses, surrounded by hills in a lush natural landscape with green meadows and matsu pine trees and numerous figures enhanced by the contrast of colours against the gold leaf.
The composition follows the tradition of Rakuchū Rakugai-zu, depicting scenes in and around Kyoto, with Nijō Castle prominently featured at the centre of the composition. In front of the fortified complex, a ceremonial procession unfolds, with a palanquin, mounted figures and numerous attendants, while temples, residences and scenes of daily life emerge among the surrounding hills. Large golden clouds divide and connect the different areas of the landscape, creating depth and rhythm throughout the composition.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
--- The byobu is in good condition with minor wear to the paper, silk, and lacquered frame, consistent with age. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL or FedEx, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
