Description from the seller
A Japanese Satsuma ceramic plate, finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gold.
The plate depicts an elegant outdoor scene during the cherry blossom season, with a group of geishas and a man set within a lakeside landscape. The scene is rendered with great attention to detail, particularly in the intricate patterns of the garments and the minute elements of the landscape.
The central lobed reserve is framed by a broad cobalt-blue border, richly embellished in gold with intricate geometric and floral motifs.
Signed underneath the base within a rectangular reserve.
Satsuma ware is one of the finest expressions of Japanese ceramics. Originating from the ancient province of Satsuma (now Kagoshima), it was produced as early as the Edo period (1603–1868) using low-temperature firing, which gives it the characteristic surface with craquelure and vibrant decorations.
The dish is in good condition with wear to the gilding. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
