Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
A six-panel paper and wood byōbu from Japan, dating to the Taisho period (circa 1920), 174 cm high and 363 cm wide with 2 cm depth, in a lacquered frame, authentic and in fair condition, depicting a mountainous lake landscape with pine trees and rocky promontories in soft colours, and including the original certificate of authenticity for wall mounting or use as a room divider.
Description from the seller
A six-panel screen painted on paper in soft colors, depicting an expansive mountainous lake landscape, articulated through successive rocky promontories, small islands and pine trees.
Irregular rocky formations rise from the water, while distant mountains rendered in pale washes of ink enhance the sense of depth.
Particular attention is given to the treatment of vegetation, rocky surfaces and water, combining fine brushwork, graduated ink washes and restrained touches of blue, green and brown pigments.
The screen is finished with a lacquered wooden frame.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
---The byobu is in good overall condition, with signs of wear, stains, holes (particularly in the upper sixth panel) and restorations. Patches on the reverse. Wear to the lacquered frame. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
