A Taisho period byobu folding screen, six panels, 171 cm high by 376 cm wide, on paper with gold leaf, in a lacquered wooden frame, in good condition, with the original certificate of authenticity from Mastromauro Japanese Art Gallery.
Description from the seller
A stunning six-panel folding screen depicting a powerful stream sweeping across the entire composition, cascading between large rocks and forming rapids, swirling currents and broad expansions of white water.
Water dominates the scene, rendered through a dense succession of pale blue, gray and white brushstrokes interrupted by the dark masses of projecting rocks. Along the banks, rocky slopes covered with vegetation introduce green and brown tones, while large gold clouds enter from the upper and lateral edges, framing the landscape and heightening its sense of movement.
The contrast between the continuous force of the rushing water and the broad, tranquil forms of the gold clouds gives the composition a remarkable visual rhythm, further enhanced by the expansive horizontal format of the screen. Dated and sealed at the lower right.
The screen is finished with a lacquered wooden frame.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
--- The byobu is in very good condition, with minor wear to the surface and lacquered frame. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
