Eleonora Stol, Figuren, a 150 by 100 cm mixed-media painting from 2009, hand-signed and an original edition in the Expressionism style.
Description from the seller
This large-format work by Eleonora Stol (1946–2022) from 2008 is executed in mixed media on canvas. The composition consists of several nude and partially clothed human figures that are strongly intertwined with each other. Bodies, faces, arms and legs overlap and are alternately marked by bold black contours and finer, almost sketch-like lines. This creates a layered image in which different figures seem to merge into one another.
The color usage is pronounced, with large yellow and orange-red fields opposing accents in pink, purple, turquoise and blue. Some areas are broad and painterly filled, while other parts of the canvas are intentionally left open and mainly defined by linework. Bottom right hand-signed Eleonora Stol 09. Dimensions: 150 × 100 cm.
Artist biography
Eleonora Stol (Leiden, 1946–2022) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist, also known as La Roja. From 1965 to 1967 she studied visual arts at St. Joost in Breda and later, from 1980 to 1987, at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. Her oeuvre is characterized by an expressive combination of painting and drawing, in which human figures, love, corporeality and movement recur regularly. Stol worked with diverse materials and techniques and combined powerful color fields with a free, direct line. In particular, red, pink and other saturated colors play a prominent role in her visual language. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally; in 2011, for example, there was a solo presentation at the Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice."}
