Eleonora Stol, Figuren, a mixed media on canvas created in 2010, 140 × 120 cm, Netherlands, sold by Galerie, original edition, hand-signed, in good condition, in the Expressionism style.
Description from the seller
This large-format work by Eleonora Stol (1946–2022) is executed in mixed media on canvas. The image-filling composition consists of a stacking of human and fantastical figures, where bodies, faces, and limbs grasp each other and partially overlap. In the upper left is a distinctive head with spiral elements, while to the right several figurative forms are placed on top of each other. Drawn contours and sketch-like lines remain visible within and over the painted areas.
The image is dominated by bold red and orange-red fields, alternated with pink, yellow, turquoise, blue, and lighter flesh tones. Broad, direct brushstrokes contrast with finer drawing lines and with locally unpainted parts of the canvas. Lower right signed Eleonora Stol and dated 2010. Dimensions: 140 × 120 cm.
Artist biography
Eleonora Stol (Leiden, 1946–2022) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist, also known as La Roja. From 1965 to 1967 she trained in visual arts at St. Joost in Breda and later, from 1980 to 1987, studied at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. Her oeuvre is characterized by an expressive combination of painting and drawing, in which human figures, love, corporeality, and movement recur frequently. Stol worked with a range of materials and techniques, combining strong color fields with a free, direct line. Red, pink, and other saturated colors play a prominent role in her visual language. Her work has been exhibited domestically and internationally; in 2011, among other things, a solo presentation took place at the Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice.
