The sheet was created in 1954 for the famous Paris edition of “Derrière le Miroir”, Nos. 66–67–68, published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris, and printed at the Mourlot workshop, Paris.

The composition depicts the Paris Opera, above which Chagall’s characteristic world of figures—couples in love and floating beings—unfolds. The intense red–green–blue color scheme makes the sheet one of the especially decorative motifs of the Paris series.

Catalogue raisonné: Mourlot No. 102; Cramer Books No. 24. The attribution to Mourlot 102 is also confirmed by Galerie Kornfeld and Christie’s.

Edition: unsigned and unnumbered, as intended for the regular Derrière le Miroir edition. In addition to this impression, there exist separately signed and numbered or state-printed copies.

Condition:
The sheet is in very good, age-appropriate condition upon external inspection, with strong, well-preserved color. Not examined under glass. The high-quality frame is also in good condition; the upper frame rail shows light scratches or signs of use.

On the reverse is an older label from Kunsthaus Haenle with the artist credit Marc Chagall, title “Die Oper”, dating 1954, technique “Orig.-Farb-Litho” (original color litho), the dimensions, and the information DLM 66–67–68 / Mourlot 102.
