AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This work on paper by Kees van Bohemen (1928–1985) dates from 1983 and is signed and dated at the bottom right. The composition is built around an interaction of abstract and suggestively figurative forms against a predominantly brown-beige background.

On the left dominates a dark, organic form, enclosed by curved contours and loose lines. On the right emerges a more architectural structure of rectangular facets and diagonals. White and black areas alternate with subtle accents in pink, blue, yellow and orange. The combination of strong outlines, transparent color fields, and brisk, dynamic lines gives the piece a pronounced dynamism and spatial depth.
Executed in mixed media on paper. Dimensions: 70 × 99 cm. Including frame: 91 × 120 × 3 cm.

Artist biography
Kees van Bohemen (The Hague, 1928–1985) studied from 1943 to 1948 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. After his studies he spent a considerable time in Paris. In the late 1950s he joined the Dutch Informal Group, in the circle of Armando, Jan Schoonhoven, Jan Henderikse and Henk Peeters, among others. His initially strongly abstract body of work later developed into an expressive visual language in which figurative and abstract elements merge. Van Bohemen received the Talens Prize in 1963 and the Jacob Maris Prize in 1964. Travels and stays in, among others, the United States and Africa yielded new subjects for his painting. His work is held in the collections of Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, among others.
