A six-panel Meiji-period byōbu folding screen from Japan, painted on paper with a gold-leaf border, 164 cm high by 350 cm wide and 2 cm deep, depicting a rural landscape with thatched houses and figures among pines, framed with silk and a lacquered wooden frame and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A six-panel screen painted on paper with a gold-leaf border depicting an expansive rural landscape with traditional dwellings set within nature.
The composition unfolds along a watercourse that runs through fields and paths, with thatched-roof houses scattered among pine trees and vegetation. Small figures animate the scene as they carry out daily activities, while in the background soft mountain profiles rise, rendered with light washes.
The panels are framed by an elegant silk border, while a lacquered wooden frame completes and protects the screen.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
---The byobu is in good condition, with light stains, minor paper imperfections, and some wear to the lacquered frame. Please refer to the photos for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
