Sumida-Gawa export vase (Rakan scene) from the late Meiji period (approx. 1895–1905) by Ishiguro Kōkō, signed with a hyotan seal, a low-fired stoneware with flambé glaze in deep lavender-violet tones, height 315 mm, diameter 181 mm, provenance Privatsammlung, Japan, original/authentic, with a repaired right hand and four missing fingers, overall in good condition.
Description from the seller
Museum-quality, expressive spectacle vase of the legendary Japanese export pottery Sumida-Gawa (Sumida-yaki) from the late Meiji period.
The plastically applied group of figures shows the Buddhist Arhat (Lohan) Asita with his characteristic long eyebrows, reverently raising a green-glazed sacrifice bowl. He is flanked by his younger pupil (Karako). The garments are executed in the finest blue-and-white underglaze porcelain painting.
The vase captivates in the upper section with a masterful, thick flambé glaze in deep lavender, violet, and seladon tones, which forms a brilliant contrast to the bark-like red base.
The bottom displays the characteristic spirally wound base with the raised, embossed artist’s seal in the form of a bottle gourd (calabash / hyotan). It is the rare, documented signature of Ishiguro Kōkō (石黒香々), impressed with the characters Kō-ko (香二). Kōkō was among the most talented masters of this style in Tokyo around the turn of the century.
Age-appropriate honest, collectible condition. The right hand was historically glued in the past; four fingers are missing (old, darkened flaw). Age cracking on the porcelain rims.
A fascinating and honest enrichment for any discerning collection of Japanese art.
