Object Description:
Elegant and authentic animal incense burner (koro) in patinated bronze, depicting a finely carved bird perched on a rock. Japanese work from the late Meiji era (ca. 1890-1910).
The back of the bird is removable/articulated, opening to an interior receptacle designed to hold the incense. The interior shows a black patina and traces of original soot, evidence of prior use. The feather details and the rocky texture of the base are very well rendered. Unmarked model, characteristic of high-quality export pieces of this period.
